Glycemia, at CES 2021 the smartwatch that measures it (without needles)

A nice surprise from CES 2021 for diabetics or anyone who needs to often measure their blood glucose: a Japanese startup presented a device capable of detecting values without needles.

Quantum Operation has in fact announced that it has found a solution for the continuous and non-invasive monitoring of blood glucose. It is a real one smartwatch capable of accurately measuring blood glucose from the wrist.

The device scans the blood through a small spectrometer which, of course, is capable of measuring other values such as heart rate and ECG. The secret? The startup has patented spectroscopy materials built into the smartwatch and its strap.

To use it, the wearer simply activates the smart watch and then monitoring from the menu and, after about 20 seconds, the data will pop up. Quantum says it plans to sell its hardware to insurers and healthcare professionals, as well as develop a platform for big data to collect and review information generated by patients who will wear the device.

Even the same Apple (as well as other companies) has worked on a similar technology, with a lot – according to rumors – of an ad hoc laboratory. In 2018, AppleInsider found a patent filed by the “moriscata apple” relating to a device with absorption spectroscopy to monitor blood glucose levels.

Currently, however, there is no one on the market commercial standard reliable based on this technology. We will see if the Quantum product can really make the difference in this sense.
