Sony introduced the new PlayStation 5 – 30% smaller, with a 1TB SSD and removable storage
6 days ago
Sony has unexpectedly introduced an updated version of the PlayStation 5 game console, which has become more compact and lighter than the original version produced previously. In fact, this is the PS5 Slim, although the Japanese manufacturer itself does not call the new product that, preferring to call it the “new PS5”. The prices for the new console will not differ from the prices for current versions of the PS5.
The volume of the new PS5 is reduced by more than 30% and the weight by 18% and 24% respectively compared to the previous models PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. While the overall design concept remains the same, the side panels have been split in half. The console now features four separate panels, with the top being glossy while the bottom remains matte.
Regardless, Sony’s decision to add the ability to upgrade the new PS5 Digital Edition to a regular PS5 with a disc drive is worth noting. The thing is, the company will release a removable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive for PS5, which will be sold separately at a price of $79.99 or €119.99. Together with the floppy drive, the user receives the corresponding side panel for the console, so that after the upgrade it looks no different from the regular PS5.
In terms of characteristics, the new version of the PlayStation 5 practically does not differ from the previous version. It also uses an AMD processor with eight Zen 2 cores (16 threads, up to 3.5 GHz) and RDNA 2 graphics with 36 execution units, as well as 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM shared between the CPU and GPU becomes. The main difference in terms of characteristics is the new product’s solid-state drive increased to 1 TB. Previously, the PS5 was only equipped with an 825 GB SSD. With this upgrade you can install several more games on your console.
The new version of the PS5 will go on sale in the US in November this year. It will be distributed worldwide in the coming months. Once stocks of the current versions of the PS5 are sold out, the new PS5 will be the only model available.
The recommended retail prices for the new PS5 are as follows:
- USA
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray Drive – $499.99.
PS5 Digital Edition – $449.99.
- Europe
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray drive – €549.99.
