Apple has already shown the world what happens when it\u00a0develops its own chips<\/a>, now the company is preparing to commercialize its own battery technology.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0ET News reports<\/a>\u00a0(via\u00a0MacRumors<\/a>), Apple has apparently been working on its own battery technology since 2018, but is nearing the point where it’s ready for commercialization. In 2025, it’s expected this new type of battery will make its way into one or more of Apple’s own devices.<\/p>\n

The long-running project covers all aspects of battery design and involves the development of materials for use in the battery anode and cathode. New material compositions have been pursued to improve key battery features such as energy density, output, and battery stability.<\/p>\n

Apple is also thought to be experimenting with the use of carbon nanotubes for increased performance, as well as replacing graphite with silicon to allow for increased battery capacity and shorter charging times. That’s potentially very good news considering China is now\u00a0limiting exports of graphite<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With the M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14-inch achieving\u00a030 hours of battery life<\/a>\u00a0using existing battery tech, you have to wonder just how high that battery life figure can go with a next-gen battery Apple designed itself. Alternatively, Apple could choose to reduce the size of the battery considerably while still offering 30 hours of use.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0iPhone 15<\/a>\u00a0battery life\u00a0isn’t a huge improvement<\/a>\u00a0over its predecessor, and that’s likely to be the\u00a0same case for the iPhone 16<\/a>. However, if Apple can get this new battery ready in time for devices in 2025, the iPhone 17 could raise the bar considerably for what classes as “good” phone battery life.<\/p>\n
