Well, sort of: it turns out they aren\u2019t Qi2-certified yet. But neither is anything else.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Qi2 is an update to the Qi wireless charging standard that adds a ring of magnets to ensure proper alignment of the charging coils. You know, like MagSafe. Unlike MagSafe, Qi2 is an open standard \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/3\/23538131\/qi2-wireless-charging-apple-samsung\">Apple even contributed its \u201cmagnetic power profile\u201d to it<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and Android phone makers are expected to adopt it as well. That\u2019s great. Few things are more frustrating than waking up to a dead phone because you plopped it on the charger a few millimeters off-center, and magnetic alignment fixes that. Stick that same Android phone on a\u00a0<em>certified\u00a0<\/em>MagSafe charger, and it\u2019ll drop down to 5W or even less, while an iPhone would get 15W. Qi2 offers the tantalizing possibility of having one damn magnetic charger that aligns properly every time and charges everything at the same rate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div Well, Paul Golden, the marketing director for the Wireless Power Consortium, which developed the Qi2 standard, told\u00a0<em>The Verge\u00a0<\/em>via email,<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote ewrhy30\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy37 _1xwtict0\">I can tell you that no Qi2 products have been certified yet.\u00a0The Qi2 specification has been finalized.\u00a0We\u2019re awaiting the certification testing equipment to be delivered, tested and verified.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">That explains why the WPC doesn\u2019t have a public-facing certification database for Qi2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com\/products\">like it does for Qi<\/a>: ain\u2019t nothing to put in it yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Golden\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/3\/23538131\/qi2-wireless-charging-apple-samsung\">previously told\u00a0<em>The Verge<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that \u201cMagnet size, dimensions and strength will all be specified in the [Qi2] standard,\u201d but we don\u2019t know whether previous MagSafe iPhones will work with Qi2 chargers. We also don\u2019t know whether hypothetical future Qi2 phones will work with all the neat MagSafe-compatible handles, mounts, and stands that are already out there. Be neat if they could, though.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">If the iPhone 15\u00a0<em>does<\/em>\u00a0support 15W charging over Qi2, there\u2019s still at least one reason to spring for MagSafe certification anyway:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23798104\/apple-standby-mode-iphone-ios-17-clock-widgets-photos-customize-how-to\">StandBy mode<\/a>. While you can use StandBy with\u00a0<em>any<\/em>\u00a0charger as long as it\u2019s upright and in landscape mode, if you use it with a MagSafe-certified charger, it can remember your preferences for that particular location. So if you have a charger by your nightstand and one on your desk, it\u2019ll automatically pop up the right StandBy screen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Golden told us that the WPC is currently aiming for a \u201csoft launch\u201d in October and full rollout in November.
