The company now plans to develop its own ChatGPT-like AI service for internal use. But for now, it limits the length of questions submitted to the service to 1024 bytes, reports\u00a0<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/economist.co.kr\/article\/view\/ecn202303300057?s=31\" data-url=\"https:\/\/economist.co.kr\/article\/view\/ecn202303300057?s=31\" data-component-tracked=\"1\">Economist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So far, Samsung Semiconductor has recorded three instances of ChatGPT use which led to a data leaks. While three may not seem like a lot, they all happened over the course of 20 days, so the situation is quite disturbing.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" data-widget-id=\"a6d1f490-ce47-442d-ae65-be6078c67a27\" data-result=\"missing\"><\/aside>\n<p>In one case, a Samsung\u00a0Semiconductor\u00a0employee\u00a0submitted\u00a0source code\u00a0of a proprietary program to ChatGPT to fix errors, which essentially disclosed the code of a top-secret application to an artificial intelligence run by an external company.<\/p>\n<p>The second case was perhaps even more alarming as another employee\u00a0entered\u00a0test patterns\u00a0meant\u00a0to\u00a0identify\u00a0defective\u00a0chips\u00a0and requested optimization.\u00a0Test sequences meant to identify defects are strictly confidential. Meanwhile, optimizing these test sequences and possibly reducing their number can speed up silicon test and verification procedures, which significantly cuts down costs.<\/p>\n<p>Yet another employee\u00a0used\u00a0the\u00a0<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/clova.ai\/en\/research\/research-areas.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/clova.ai\/en\/research\/research-areas.html\" data-component-tracked=\"1\">Naver Clova<\/a>\u00a0application\u00a0to convert a meeting recording into a document,\u00a0then submitted\u00a0it to ChatGPT\u00a0to prepare a presentation.<\/p>\n<p>These actions\u00a0clearly\u00a0put confidential information at risk, prompting Samsung to warn its employees about the dangers of using ChatGPT. Samsung Electronics informed its executives and employees that data entered into ChatGPT is transmitted and stored on external servers, making it impossible for the company to retrieve it\u00a0and increasing risks\u00a0of confidential information leakage.\u00a0While ChatGPT\u00a0is a powerful tool,\u00a0its open learning data feature can expose sensitive information to\u00a0third parties, which is unacceptable in the highly-competitive semiconductor industry.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0conglomerate\u00a0is currently preparing protective measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
