Sony<\/a>\u00a0has said it believes\u00a0PlayStation<\/a>\u00a0VR2 has a \u201cgood chance\u201d of outselling its predecessor.<\/p>\n

The original PlayStation VR launched for\u00a0PS4<\/a>\u00a0in October 2016 and had sold five million units by the end of 2019, according to Sony.<\/p>\n

Its follow-up, which requires users to own a\u00a0PS5<\/a>\u00a0console, launched last month priced at $549.99 \/ \u20ac599.99 \/ \u00a3529.99.<\/p>\n

During a fireside chat at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference on Monday, Sony executive deputy president and chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki was asked to evaluate PS VR2\u2019s launch and what the company\u2019s expectations for the hardware are going forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very happy to launch VR2 on PS5,\u201d he said. \u201cVR1, we sold over five million units, and I think we have a good chance to exceed that amount with PlayStation VR2.\u201d<\/p>\n

Totoki went on to reference forecasts that the overall VR market could be one of the largest growth areas in the media and entertainment segment during the first half of this decade.<\/p>\n

If accurate, he said there\u2019s \u201cgood potential\u201d for the VR\/AR market and also \u201cgood potential of technology development in this field as well\u201d.<\/p>\n

In late January,\u00a0Bloomberg<\/a>\u00a0sources claimed Sony had\u00a0halved its launch projections for PS VR2<\/a>\u00a0following disappointing pre-order numbers.<\/p>\n

They claimed Sony\u2019s shipment forecasts were cut from two million to one million units this quarter. In response, Sony issued a statement claiming it had \u201cnot cut PlayStation VR2 production numbers\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sony recently announced that Totoki will be promoted to president, chief operating officer and CFO, effective April 1, 2023.<\/p>\n

A management reshuffle will see Totoki replace current Sony president Kenichiro Yoshida, who will retain his roles as group chairman and CEO.<\/p>\n
