Hawkins\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"c-byline__item\"><time class=\"c-byline__item\" datetime=\"2021-07-26T22:42:00\" data-ui=\"timestamp\">Jul 26, 2021<\/time><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-19889\" src=\"https:\/\/ljdevice.com.tw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p id=\"NGybaU\">Tesla is weathering\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/6\/23\/22547826\/chip-shortage-cars-playstation-5-gpus-semiconductors-time-foundaries-tsmc\">the global chip shortage<\/a>\u00a0by rewriting its vehicle software to support alternative chips, CEO Elon Musk said during an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/7\/26\/22594778\/tesla-q2-2021-earnings-revenue-profit-credits-emissions-bitcoin\">earnings call Monday<\/a>. The shortage has upended the auto industry at a time of historic demand for new cars, leading to factory shutdowns, longer wait times, and higher prices.<\/p>\n<p id=\"SFsSFf\">\u201cWe were able to substitute alternative chips, and then write the firmware in a matter of weeks,\u201d Musk said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a matter of swapping out a chip; you also have to rewrite the software.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"spEdyW\">This approach has helped Tesla maintain high levels of production,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/7\/2\/22560608\/tesla-q2-2021-deliveries-elon-musk\">delivering over 200,000 vehicles<\/a>\u00a0to customers over the course of the last three months, the company said. Tesla generated $11.9 billion in revenue in the quarter, including $1.1 billion in profit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"PMYjlL\">Tesla isn\u2019t alone in feeling the effects of the global shortage. With demand for cars at an all-time high, automakers around the world are feeling the constraints of production with chips in short supply. This week, Daimler and BMW said the lack of chips has forced it to shutdown some of their assembly lines, which will cut the companies\u2019 output by tens of thousands of vehicles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"NQHILw\"><q>\u201cTHE GLOBAL CHIP SHORTAGE SITUATION REMAINS QUITE SERIOUS\u201d<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"IplDvm\">Musk said that Tesla\u2019s future growth will depend on a swift resolution to the global semiconductor shortage. \u201cThe global chip shortage situation remains quite serious,\u201d he said. \u201cFor the rest of this year, our growth rate will be determined by the slowest part in our supply chain,\u201d which includes the wide range of chips used in Tesla\u2019s vehicles.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ouor7i\">Tesla relies on chips to power everything from its airbags to the modules that control the vehicles\u2019 seatbelts \u2014 which now means Tesla is missing components that are essential for the vehicle\u2019s safety features. \u201cA big struggle this quarter was the module that controls the airbags and seatbelts,\u201d Musk said. \u201cAnd obviously you cannot ship a car without those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"rvTMBo\">Musk sounded an uncertain note about the future. \u201cIt does seem like it\u2019s getting better,\u201d he said, \u201cbut it\u2019s hard to predict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Source:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/7\/26\/22595060\/tesla-chip-shortage-software-rewriting-ev-processor\">Tesla\u00a0rewrote its own software to survive the chip shortage &#8211; The Verge<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Andrew J.
