{"id":19770,"date":"2021-07-13T10:41:31","date_gmt":"2021-07-13T02:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ljdevice.com.tw\/?p=19770\/"},"modified":"2021-07-13T10:41:57","modified_gmt":"2021-07-13T02:41:57","slug":"global-chip-shortage-starting-major-real-world-consequences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ljdevice.com.tw\/en\/global-chip-shortage-starting-major-real-world-consequences\/","title":{"rendered":"The global chip shortage is starting to have major real-world consequences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MAY 7 2021<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-19771\" src=\"https:\/\/ljdevice.com.tw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/106633913-1595860122809-gettyimages-1160287370-342201311_1-10-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As technology has advanced, semiconductor chips have spread from computers and cars to toothbrushes and tumble dryers \u2014 they now lurk beneath the hood of a surprising number of products.<\/li>\n<li>But demand for chips is continuing to outstrip supply, and car makers are no longer the only companies feeling the pinch.<\/li>\n<li>Many companies \u2014 particularly those in China who have been hit by sanctions \u2014 are boosting their stockpiles of in-demand chips to try to ride out the storm, but that\u2019s making chips even harder to get hold of for other firms.The severity of the global chip shortage has gone up a notch over the last few weeks and it\u2019s now looking as though millions of people will be impacted.As technology has advanced, semiconductor chips have spread from computers and cars to toothbrushes and tumble dryers \u2014 they now lurk beneath the hood of a surprising number of products.\n<div class=\"BoxInline-container \"><\/div>\n<p>But demand for chips is continuing to outstrip supply, and car makers are no longer the only companies feeling the pinch.<\/p>\n<p>Alan Priestley, an analyst at Gartner, told CNBC that the average person on the street is bound to be impacted by the chip shortage in one form or another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat it will mean is they can\u2019t get something, or prices are slightly higher,\u201d Priestley said during an interview on Thursday.<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>South Korean tech giant Samsung\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4b7b284a-a280-4252-bcc7-0fb6a4ef5d92\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said last week<\/a>\u00a0that the chip shortage is hitting television and appliance production, while LG admitted the shortage is a risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the global semiconductor shortage, we are also experiencing some effects especially around certain set products and display production,\u201d said Ben Suh, head of Samsung\u2019s investor relations, on a call with analysts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MidResponsive-midResponsiveContainer\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe are discussing with retailers and major channels about supply plans so that we are able to allocate the components to the products that have more urgency or higher priority in terms of supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samsung\u2019s co-chief executive and mobile chief, Koh Dong-jin,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-56433082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said at a shareholder meeting in March<\/a>\u00a0that there\u2019s a serious imbalance in supply and demand of chips in the IT sector. At the time, the company said it might skip the launch of the next Galaxy Note smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>LG said it is \u201cclosely monitoring the situation as no manufacturer can be free of the problem if it gets prolonged,\u201d according to The Financial Times. LG did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"><\/a>Everyday appliances at risk<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Production of low-margin processors, such as those used to weigh clothes in a washing machine or toast bread in a smart toaster, has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9a497f21-e3e4-4c74-8737-07cd13209475\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also been hit<\/a>. While most retailers are still able to get their hands on these products at the moment, they may face issues in the months ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Even dog-washing businesses are suffering,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2021\/05\/02\/chip-semiconductor-shortage-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to The Washington Post<\/a>. CCSI, which makes electronic dog-washing booths in the Illinois village of Garden Prairie, was recently told by its circuit board supplier that the usual chips weren\u2019t available, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>The business, which did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment, was reportedly offered a different chip, but that required the company to adjust its circuit boards, raising costs in the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis particular problem affects all aspects of manufacturing, from little people to big conglomerates,\u201d President Russell Caldwell reportedly said. \u201cLiterally we have corn fields around us \u2026 there\u2019s not a lot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many companies \u2014 particularly those in China who have been hit by sanctions \u2014 are boosting their stockpiles of in-demand chips to try to ride out the storm, but that\u2019s making chips even harder to get hold of for other firms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"><\/a>Auto industry remains worst hit<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The automotive sector, which relies on chips for everything from the computer management of engines to driver assistance systems, is still the hardest hit. Companies like Ford, Volkswagen and Jaguar Land Rover have shut down factories, laid off workers and slashed vehicle production.<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis, the world\u2019s fourth biggest car maker,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/stellantis-says-production-hit-chip-shortage-getting-worse-2021-05-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said on Wednesday<\/a>\u00a0that the chip shortage had gotten worse in the last quarter. Nissan and Renault did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Rental car companies are also feeling the effects as they\u2019re unable to buy the new vehicles they want, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-03\/rental-companies-buy-up-used-cars-as-microchip-crisis-gets-worse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a Bloomberg report on Tuesday<\/a>. Hertz and Enterprise, which have traditionally profited from buying new vehicles in bulk and renting them out, have reportedly resorted to buying used cars at auction instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe global microchip shortage has impacted the entire car rental industry\u2019s ability to receive new vehicle orders as quickly as we would like,\u201d a Hertz spokesperson told CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>Hertz said it is \u201csupplementing\u201d its fleet \u201cby purchasing low-mileage, preowned vehicles\u201d from auctions and dealerships.<\/p>\n<p>An Enterprise spokesperson said the global chip shortage \u201chas impacted new vehicle availability and deliveries across the industry at a time when demand is already high.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"><\/a>Complex issue involving many moving components<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The world\u2019s largest chip manufacturer, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/tsmc-says-can-catch-up-with-auto-chip-demand-by-end-june-cbs-2021-05-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said on Sunday<\/a>\u00a0that it thinks it will be able to catch up with automotive demand by June.<\/p>\n<p>But Patrick Armstrong, CIO of Plurimi Investment Managers, told CNBC \u201cStreet Signs Europe\u201d on Tuesday, that the timeline is highly ambitious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you listen to Ford, BMW, Volkswagen, they all highlighted that there\u2019s bottlenecks in capacity and they can\u2019t get the chips they need to manufacture the new cars,\u201d he said, adding that he thinks it will go on for 18 months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-test=\"WildCardEmbed\">\n<div class=\"WildcardEmbed-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/art19.com\/shows\/bcd08fc3-8958-4c47-bf8e-524432adcd77\/episodes\/30369294-05fb-435d-b521-0de042712416\/embed\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The chief executive of German chipmaker Infineon said Tuesday that the semiconductor industry is in unchartered territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current situation, where all verticals are booming, I have never seen before,\u201d Reinhard Ploss told CNBC\u2019s \u201cStreet Signs Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ploss said it is \u201cvery clear it will take time\u201d until supply and demand are rebalanced. \u201cI think two years is too long, but we will definitely see it reaching out to 2022,\u201d he said. \u201cI think additional capacity is going to come \u2026 I expect a more balanced situation in the next calendar year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramping up production takes time. \u201cYou can\u2019t suddenly go to a chip vendor and say, \u2018give me a million new chips\u2019 if you haven\u2019t got the order in place because there\u2019s a throughput time,\u201d said Priestley, who works in Gartner\u2019s technology and service provider research team. \u201cIf I put an order in today, and there\u2019s capacity available, it may take me three months or more to get the chip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that most consumer products have extended supply chains and \u201cwe haven\u2019t started to see the impact\u201d of the chip shortage in some areas. \u201cIf Apple builds a new phone today, they may not ship until end of the year,\u201d said Priestley.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the issue in the automotive industry is being compounded because the car manufacturers don\u2019t use the most advanced \u2014 or bleeding edge \u2014 chips, according to Priestley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey tend to use chips that are made on older manufacturing processes and the chip companies are obviously moving towards using the higher-revenue bleeding edge products, and they\u2019re not investing in your capacity on the older processes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline3\"><\/a>Tech sovereignty<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Nations are now being forced to think about how they can increase the number of chips they produce. The vast majority of the world\u2019s chips are made in China, while the U.S. is the second biggest producer.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, has said it wants to build up chip manufacturing capacity in Europe as part of an effort to become more self-reliant on what it sees as a critical technology.<\/p>\n<p>Europe currently accounts for less than 10% of global chip production, although that is up from 6% five years ago.
